  • Just beyond that distant hill is the Mediterranean Sea of the Cote d'Azure. Getting there from the north, from say, Aix-en-Provence, includes the col de l'Espigoulier. The coastal hills and mountains are laced with this type of road and are relatively unknown outside of the region.

  • The GS has been a best seller for BMW since it was first introduced in the mid-1980s. The design opened a new genre for motorcycles - the Adventure Touring Motorcycle. BMW has continued to develop this design until this day and this example is from 1991. It is at home on any road in Europe, paved or not.

  • Southern France is likely best known for the regions of Provence and the Cote d'Azure. But there is much more to the South of France than this however. These are the mountains of the Cevens, wild and remote, west of Provence.

  • In the wine producing regions in the South of France where the land is covered in grape vines, Fall is a special time of year. Early Autumn brings the "vindage" or grape harvest and long days of very hard work await the villagers. A few weeks later, as the weather cools, the leaves on the vines begin to change and long days of exploration await the landscape photographer.

  • The road leading to the village of Carces in the South of France, runs through vineyards for several kilometers. Here it is lined with plane trees (sycamore) so common in France. The plane trees were planted by Napoleon so his troops would have shade as they marched.

  • Riding down a road in rural France we came upon a shepherdess with her flock in a pasture. In the coming months, we would get to know her, her dogs and her flock, but this was our first meeting. Is this not the cutest face you've seen all day?

  • In the 19th Century painters flocked from throughout Europe to paint the magical light of southern France. French painter Paul Cezane focused much of his time on Mont Sainte Victoire. It is beautiful for every angle and every side.

  • At the 900 year old Abbey du Thoronet, just outside of the village of Carces in the South of France, Mass is celebrated on Sunday morning just as it has been for centuries. As part of the ceremony, Gregorian chants are sung by the choir. The acoustics in this stone building are simply amazing. A person speaking in a normal voice can be clearly heard at the other end of the chapel, over one hundred meters away.
