  • The road leading to the village of Carces in the South of France, runs through vineyards for several kilometers. Here it is lined with plane trees (sycamore) so common in France. The plane trees were planted by Napoleon so his troops would have shade as they marched.

  • North of Toulon in southern France is a landscape of parasol pines, vineyards, and olive groves. For obvious reasons, I've titled this image, "Ruban de Lumière" which translates from French to, "Ribbon of Light" in English.

  • "Col" is the French term for a mountain pass. One of my favorite driving roads in the world is the Col d'Champs in the southern Alps of France. It is challenging and remote and not to be missed.

  • Southern France is likely best known for the regions of Provence and the Cote d'Azure. But there is much more to the South of France than this however. These are the mountains of the Cevens, wild and remote, west of Provence.

  • The Piedmont region of Italy, Piemonte, blanketed in hills, each with its own village, castle, and vineyards. Connecting all of these interesting places is a web of roads twisting up and down the slopes from village to village. In the background of this image are the snow covered Alps.

  • The Cevennes region of southern France is remote. This image of the col d'Rousette pass road illustrates this very well. It is just this sort of road through just this sort of landscape that makes motorcycle touring in mountain regions of Europe so spectacular and rewarding.

  • The Central Coast of California includes many areas that seem wild and unsettled. Some of which are privately owned cattle ranches or vineyards, some of which is public lands in the form of parks and preserves. There are wonderfully interesting and challenging roads in this area as well. This one is G16, running east of from Carmel Valley.
